Hi guys we are almost half way through the Teignbridge league fixtures and I couldn't wish to be in a better position, so give yourselves a pat on the back and enjoy the Christmas break.
Don't overindulge because battle resumes on the 10th of January with an away match at Ideford so if you are unavailable on that date please let me know. Many thanks.

Christmas Bowls Evening

Last night (Sunday 18th) a bowls evening was arranged with a bit of a difference (see pictures below). The games were great fun with prizes won for landing on the coloured stars. Also a bowls related quiz tested everyone's knowledge on the ESMBA rules. After the bowling we all tucked into the lovely food bought along by all the players. With bellies full Steve finished of the evening with a Christmas themed Quiz. Thank you to everyone for bringing food and to Trevor for his hard work to make the night one to remember. Thanks also to Steve for his Quiz and to Edwin for donating £20 towards the prizes and to anyone I have forgotten to mention.

County Triples Finals Sunday 18th December

Teignbridge League Match against Bishopsteignton

Christow 8 - Bishopsteignton 2     Shots: 46 to 41
Last night (Wednesday 14th December) Christow played their next match in the Teignbridge League which was at home to Bishopsteignton. Both matches before and after tea were close affairs which could have gone either way in the last couple of ends. Christow won 3 out of the 4 matches and also took the 2 bonus shot points. Also being played during the session before tea was an Exeter League knockout match between Christow A and Wonford B, sadly Christow were knocked out in another very close game.

Sunday 18th is Party Time!

Next Sunday will be a fun evening with food. Trevor will be bringing his fun mat games as he has kindly done for the last couple of years. All those attending have been asked to bring something for the food table. So far goodies promised are....Egg and also Tuna sandwiches, Cup Cakes, Sausage Rolls, Mini Pasties & Sausages, Cheese & Grape on Sticks, Pringles & Cheesy Biscuits.

Devon County Singles Final Report

Today Georgie and Trevor took part in the county singles final playing three games each. Georgie won two of her matches but unfortunately failed to qualify for the knockout rounds on shot difference. Trevor also failed to qualify losing all his matches, two of which only by one shot. (Probably still fatigued from his efforts at Bromsgrove)

Minor Change to Teignbridge League match against Bishops

Trevor has made a minor change to the teams for next Wednesday. Sue will now play on Mat 1 before tea and Janet on Mat 2 after tea. Full team details can be found by clicking the Teignbrdge League Fixtures link.

Teignbridge League Match against Buckfast

Last night (Friday 9th December) Christow played their next match in the Teignbrisge League and met Buckfast on their home ground. As usual they made us all very welcome on a very damp evening. In the first session before tea Christow won on Mat 1 and Buckfast won on Mat 2. After tea both matches were drawn with the same score of 10 shots each. As the shot difference was greater by Buckfast in the first session they took the 2 bonus points from the evening.

A Bit of a Christmas Do

This year we held our Christmas meal at the Teign Valley Golf Club. The evening was very enjoyable along with the food. Thanks go to Carol and Steve for organising everything.

World Bowls Tour Report by Trevor

Three Christow members travelled to Bromsgrove on Friday to take part in the world fours & pairs competition. The world fours were played on Saturday with Trevor, Carol and Tom skipped by Richard Ivings. They came third in the round robin rounds and were entered into the plate competition but unfortunately they were knocked out in the first round.
On Sunday with Carol and Tom rushing off on holiday Richard and Trevor were preparing to play in the world pairs.They came second in their group and progressed to the main competition. Winning their first match 12-8 having been at one stage 6-1 down, they progressed to second round but were beaten 10-8 by an experienced pair who are previous English champions but both Trevor and Richard had a throughly enjoyable day.

Dates Changed for Christow A's matches with Nomads A

Both the home and away matches dates have changed for Christow A  against Nomads A. The home match has changed frrom 7th December to Wednesday 15th March. The away match will now take place on Friday 6th January instead of 17th March.

Preliminary Notice of Club Meeting

A Club meeting will be held on Wednesday January 25th at 7.00pm before the evening bowls. This will be a short meeting to give everyone the opportunity to put forward ideas and to keep everyone involved. Please let Edwin, Neil or Derek know of any ideas you have for discussion prior to the evening. A notice will be attached to the information board containing items already put forward for discussion, also there will be a sheet for you to add any ideas you may have.

Club Singles Result

We held our club singles competition last night (Sunday 4th December) at Christow. They were organised by Steve and played on a knockout basis. There were 13 entrants, unlucky for some but not for Sue, who beat Geoff in the final by one shot. Well done Sue.

Christow 'B's KO Cup Match Date Change

The match against Broadclyst A (away) in the Exeter League Knockout Cup has been changed from Wednesday 14th December to Wednesday 7th December so not to conflict with the Teignbridge League match on the same evening (14th).

We had a very good result last night against Exmister, who are a hard team to beat. All four matches were won giving us the 8 points and also the extra 2 pints for overall shots.

Somerset v Devon 27th November

Today Devon visited Somerset at their home venue in Donyatt. A mixed result for the Premier and A teams. (6 Christow players in the A team). The Premier team finished with 25 points against Somersets 15. The A team with 14 points against Somersets 26. The day was very enjoyable and the carvery served up was amazing.

Devon v Cornwall 13th November

A very enjoyable and challenging match with a mix of Christow players took place today at ISCA. Devon on their home ground met Cornwall in the next round of the County Season. The Premier and A Team both finished the day with a score of 13 and the opposing teams from Cornwall with a score of 27.

On Wednesday 9th November, Christow B (Brad, Edwin & Janet) travelled to Exminster to play the next match of the season in the Exeter League. After a slow start for Christow and the score card reflecting this, the momentum of the game shifted in Christow's favour and they finished the stronger of the two teams.

A home match in the Exeter League was played at Christow last night. Christow A (Jim, Geoff & Steve) met Nomads B for their 3rd match of the season. The match was played in a friendly atmosphere with Christow maintaining steady progress and winning by 4 shots. Also last night Christow B played away to Exminster B, I will post the result of this match when I here.

Christow B v Broadclyst A Result

Last night 2nd November Christow A (Neil, Chris & Derek) Played their home match against Broadclyst A who were skipped by Janet Cuff. The game was controlled by Christow who scored steadily throughout the game with Broadclyst only scoring on 4 of the 15 ends.Four wins out of four games so far, very good start to the season.

Teignbridge League Pairs

Today 29th October saw the Teignbridge Pairs tournament take place at Christow. The 12 teams played 4 games with 3 woods with a break between games 2 and 3 where they were treated to a cream tea prepared by Chris and Wendy. Derek had his work cut out too, not only over the organisation of the event, but in adding the scores up at the end. It was very tight between Kingsteignton B and  Bishopsteignton B. Overall shots scored were needed to separate the two teams, even then there was just one shot between them. Kingstiegton B (Audrey & Andy) were declared the winners. £88.00 was raised for the charity (Exeter Leukaemia Fund) including the money raised from the raffle run by Val Beer.

1st : Kingsteignton B.... 9 Points, +13 Shots. Overall shots 42
2nd : Bishopsteignton B....9 Points, +13 Shots. Overall shots 41
3rd : Bishopsteignton A....9 Points, +12 Shots.

Christow B v Exminster A Result

Last night 26th October Christow B (Brad, Derek & Chris) met Exminster A skipped by Ken Beer.
The game started well for Christow pulling out a 9 - 3 advantage after the 5th end. By end 11 Exminster had pulled the score back to 10 - 9 in favour of Christow. On the 12th end Christow scored 4 shots which gave them a cushion they would not loose during the final 3 ends.

Devon v Dorset Sunday 23rd October

A very enjoyable and competitive games of bowls took place at ISCA yesterday. Devon met Dorset on their home ground. There were a good number of players from Christow taking part. One in the Premier team and 6 in the A team. The result at the end of play was:
Premier Team :  Devon 24 (199 shots) Dorset 16 (178 shots).
A Team : Devon 27 (204 shots) Dorset 13 (171 shots).

Abbotskerswell Presentation

On Saturday 15th October Derek & Neil attended the Abbotskerswell Teignbridge League Trophy presentation afternoon. They laid on a small triples tournament. This consisted of 3 matches each over 6 ends, this was amended to 8 ends as we were getting through the matches quickly. Each pair from visiting clubs had an Abbots player join them on each game. The winners were the team with the greatest overall shots. Winners Ideford 26 shots....runners up Christow 25 shots. Prize was a Mars bar each.....all good fun. We were then treated to a buffet tea before the presentation.

Christow A's first League match

Score: Christow A 16  Wonford B 14
In a Titanic battle of Epic proportions.....Christow A (Tom, Carol & Steve) overcame the might of Wonford B (Simon Pridham, Michael Irvings and James Smith). The match was very tight all the way trough and on the final end with Christow one shot in hand, Wonford were holding 3 shots with Tom and James still having one bowl each to play. Tom played weight into the head and managed to spring the jack where it had been sitting in a cluster of Wonfords woods and take shot. James also played weight but failed to change the outcome. Well done Christow.

Club Night Times Changed

Both Sunday and Wednesday club night timings have been changed. Sundays will still start at 7.00pm but finish half an hour earlier at 9.30pm. Wednesday evenings will start half an hour earlier at 7.00pm and  finish at 9.30pm rather than 10pm.

Devon County Triples

Last Saturday 3 teams fron Christow took part in the Devon County Triples. Steve. Trevor & Brad had a delayed start due to a bye in their group. When they did get on the mats they managed to qualify for the Finals on Sunday 18th December. The two other teams of Edwin, Janet & Beryl........Geoff, Sue & Maureen were not so fortunate and did not make the final round, hope you all enjoyed the day.
Good luck to all players this coming weekend which sees the Singles and Pairs competitions getting under way.

Exeter League Result (Christow B)

Christow B (Neil, Brad & Ralph) travelled to Silverton last night October 11th. They had a good game against Ken Holmes team and kept the score tight at 6 shots all by the 6th end. when they reached end 10 they had pulled out a lead of 14 - 7 and held on during the remaining ends to finish with a 18 - 10 win.

Exeter League Result (Christow B)

Last night 5th October, Janet, Edwin and Neil travelled to Broadclyst to play their first match of the season. They started well picking up a 4 shot lead after 2 ends, by end 6 Broadclyst had levelled the score at 5 all. Christow then won more ends than their opponents and by end 14 had a healthy 4 shot lead, this was tested with Broadclyst holding 5 shots and Christow having the last bowl they managaged to get a bowl into the head and cut Broadclysts shot count down to 2 and giving the match to Christow by 12 shots to 10. Well done Christow.

• Entrance fee £39 (to include lunch and all refreshments).

First 16 teams from different clubs will receive priority.  If your club wishes to enter more than one team, please indicate this on the slip below and, in the event of a shortfall in entries from different clubs, a draw will be made.

News regarding County Singles and Pairs 15th - 16th October

The County Singles qualifiers taking place on the 15th of October players are asked to bring their own food which can be consumed on the premises, this is due to there being a big function in the restaurant area.
The County Pairs taking place on the 16th of October is also the same day as the Exeter half marathon with road closures likely to affect travel, please bear this in mind as competitions need to start on time due to venue hire.

County Fours Competition

The new season of County & National Competitions gets under way this weekend at ISCA. It starts on Saturday 24th with the Fours. Christow have 3 teams representing the club, captained by, Geoff, Edwin & Steve. Brad & Ralph Rundle will be playing their first County games for Christow after joining the club earlier in the year. Tom & Carol Archer are playing for Totnes Creameries. Good luck to all involved. A round up of how they all got on will follow as soon as the information becomes available.
After group stages and knockouts the final was between Bow skipped by Nick Wyatt and last years winners from Musbury and Wonford skipped by James Smith. After a good start Michael Ivings Paul Pomeroy James Trott and James Smith retained their title with a 16-0 win.

Exeter League Update from the AGM

The first of this seasons Exeter League AGM was held on Thursday 15th September at St Thomas Cricket Club. The meeting started at 7.30pm and was well attended with representatives from all Clubs.
The main news of interest was the inclusion of all teams from both divisions paying in the League Knock Out Cup. The competition will be included in the fee for the regular League for this year as it is has been included to add some extra interest through the season. Each division will be drawn to play on a knockout basis against their own division teams. The first team drawn will be the home team and arrange to play the match on one of there club nights. The 1st round is to be player week commencing 17th October...Quarter Finals w/c 17th December....Semi Finals w/c 23rd January and the Final w/c 6th March. Winners from each division will then play against each other on a friendly basis. It was also proposed that a cup for the winners of each division could be awarded.

LEAGUE K.O CUP is a team event with players only playing for the team that they are registered with & will be played with one Triples (Two woods each over 10 ends and TWO Trial Ends will be played. The result decided by total shots for, in the event of a draw an extra end will be played. AII matches will be played on the weeks allocated on the fixture list. There will be NO CANCELLING or RE-ARRANGING of these matches.

Entries for the Win Graham Shield close on 1st November.

WIN GRAHAM SHELD (6's) is a club competition. Only One Team can be entered from the Club and any eligible members may be played as long as they are Registered at the start of the season. Each match will consist of One Team of Triples, (Two woods each) One Team of pairs, (Two woods each and One Singles player (Four woods each). It will be played on an Home & Away basis over 10 ends for each discipline starting with the Home teams jack first. The Winners will be the team with the Highest shots for over the Two legs. If a draw after the Home and Away matches the Triples to play an extra end to decide Winners.

There  will  be  a  meeting  held   Thursday  15^th  September  2016  at St  Thomas  Cricket  Club  7-30pm.  Please make sure your team is represented at the meeting.

Britain v Cancer Charity Bowls Competition held on Sunday 4th September 2016

Christow Short Mat Bowls Club held a charity competition on Sunday 4th September. The competition consisted of 22 teams of 3 players, each playing 4 games of 10 ends. The top 3 teams of the day were determined by points and shot difference. A certificate and cash prize were awarded to these teams, £45 to the winners. £30 to the runners up and £15 for third place. The day was a great success and all the ladies in the canteen kept the tea and coffee flowing all day and served everyone a lovely meal with help from Janice Preston, Marilyn Tregillus & Chloe Rundle. There was also a raffle which was run by Barry Stevens and raised over £200. Money raised overall for the charity was a fantastic £862. Here are a few pictures from the day....

Tegnbridge Pairs Tournament 29th October

Two players, three woods, four games. Cream tea in the middle.

COST PER TEAM - £10.00

You are invited to enter teams for the Teignbridge Pairs tournament. This a charity event with the proceeds donated to the league’s chosen charity. Clubs are encouraged to enter as many teams as they wish with the allocation of places made on the basis that each Teignbridge club will be allocated at least one team with a maximum of twelve teams for the tournament. Clubs will be notified of the allocated teams prior to the event

Last date for entry – 29^th September 2016 (entry form will be on the notice board).

Silverton Charity Triples Competition

The 2017 Silverton Charity Triples will take place on

SATURDAY 25TH FEBRUARY 2017.

As your club kindly supported our 2016 Competition, your places will

be reserved until TUESDAY 18TH OCTOBER. Soon after this date, any

remaining spaces will be offered to clubs supporting previous competitions

and then other local clubs.

16 teams play 3 matches of 10 ends in 4 groups of 4. Winners and runners then take part in a knockout competition. Lunch is included @ £24.00 per team.

Buckland Fours Competition CANCELLED

The Fours Competition to be held at Buckland Community Centre on 17th September 2016 has been CANCELLED. This is due in main to there being a lack of helpers to allow the event to run smoothly. Those that have paid will receive a refund.

A Poem called, I Am a Bowl....by Ava Cattell

I am a bowl, a wood you would say if you play professionally! Wait in a bag to be bought out to roll. I wait patiently, I wait to roll, when I am brought out ever so carefully, I just want to tear down the mat like a mad bull to red. I roll as you look on anxiously, I'm feeling nice' make you feel joy, because you are just a pawn in my evil ploy. I'll go round the block and bump into the jack, holding on for end after end. If I am feeling nasty though I won't care, I will roll straight, bump my head on the block.
I see you face, it's such a display, after all is said and done, and one of the teams triumphantly won, I'm packed away and left for another day......again. 

West Hill Open triples

Christow Win West Hill Open Triples.

On Saturday 4th June, Steve, Edwin & Janet competed in the West Hill Open Triples. They won the competition which was also won by Christow in 2015. More details to follow.
