Devon County A Team Win ICC Rinks Final
Three players from Christow, Ian, Jim and Neil joined 13 other players from Devon clubs and represented the Devon County A team in the ICC Rinks Finals at Daventry Indoor Bowling Club. The eight County qualifiers from the Preliminary rounds back in early December were split into 2 groups with the winners of each group going through to the final. The format for the Rinks is a Fours competition with 4 teams from each County. Devon were drawn with West Midlands, Hertfordshire and Kent. The second group draw saw Dorset, Essex, Somerset and Surrey play three games two before lunch and one after. Devon won their group by winning all three matches by collating more shots overall than their opponents on all 4 mats. Somerset who won the event last year, came out top in their group. The final was set for a showdown between two teams from the Southwest of England. During the final Richard Ivings kept an eye on the overall shots being scored on all four mats as he had done in the earlier rounds. The score during the final was up one minute then down the next, but never by more than a few shots. After all matches finished their games, Devon won the final by 4 shots. A great result for Robert Ivings (manager/player) and all his team.

Exeter League Meeting Report.
This evening (25th Jan) representatives from Christow, Exminster, Nomads and Silverton attended the Exeter League meeting at St Thomas Cricket Club in Exeter. Ken Beer chaired the meeting. The treasurers report showed the Leagues finances to be healthy. Rob Gayton has taken on the Treasurers roll temporarily after the passing of Brian Glanvill. He will be looking for a replacement at the AGM which will be on Thursday 26th April. Tom told Rob that Carol was possibly interested on taking on the position. The draw for the semi final round of the Knockout Cup also took place and will see Christow A home to Silverton A and Nomads A home to Wonford A (to be played W/C Monday 12th February). The meeting finished at 7.45pm.

Exeter League Result for Christow B
On Sunday evening Christow 'B' (Ralph, Chris & Derek) travelled to Exminster and met their 'A' team in the Exeter League. It was a nice evening of bowls. We played Ken Beer (skip), David White (2) and val Beer (lead). Val played a super game making virtually every wood count and getting touchers. The fortunes in the game ebbed and flowed with neither side taking a commanding lead as can be seen by the final score of just 12 shots each. Exminster went into the last end two shots up but Christow took two shots to level the game. It wa a fitting result for a good game and a super evening, truly reflecting what short mat bowls is all about.... Derek.

County Tens Away Report
Today 10 bowlers from Christow along with a few supporters travelled to Bere Alston for the County Club Team (Tens) - South/West Area competition. As there are only 3 teams challenging for this area Totnes Creameries have already progressed to the Area Final (ISCA 25th March). This leaves Bere Alston and Christow to do battle to see who they will be meeting in that final. The Singles (Jim) and Pairs (Trevor & Neil) were played first and both lost their matches. Then it was the turn of the Triples (Janet, Carol & Steve) and the Fours (Edwin, Brad, Geoff & Tom). Both teams won their match and by a healthy margin for Tom's team. This leaves the home leg level on match wins and 2 shots behind overall. So all to play for next Saturday when Bere Alston visit Christow.
Christmas Meal
Last night Christow held their Christmas meal at the Teign Valley Golf Club. Club members and their families enjoyed a very nice evening and were served wonderful food. The two waitresses on duty worked very hard and kept the courses coming without delay. Thank you to Steve for organising the evening and to Ava for singing to us all, lovely voice..

Last night Christow 'B' (Maureen, Janet & Neil) were hosts to Wonford 'B' (Pam, Barrie & Marie). The match started with Wonford wining the first end and although Christow won the second to bring the score back level, they were always chasing the game. Wonford found the weight of the mat where Christow struggled. The final score was Christow 'B' 8 Wonford 'B' 17. Enjoyable game, shame about the result.

Ideford Away Match Report
Yesterday evening 12 players and 4 very welcome supporters travelled to Ideford for our 6th match in this seasons Teignbridge League. Before the half time tea break, Carol, Ian & Tom played on mat 1 (by the door). The game was very close all the way through and a challenge for both teams due to the speed and unpredictable behaviour of the mat. Playing on Mat 2 were Mark, Brad & Jim. Their game was also a very close until they scored 4 shots close to the end when Jim trailed the jack away from Ideford. After tea Mary, Geoff & Neil had another close match on mat 1 and after watching Tom's team earlier had picked up a few tips on how to play the mat and won the match again in the final few ends. Edwin, Sean & Trevor did not disappoint on mat 2 and played a very competitive game and followed in the tradition of the evening by keeping the score tight until the later stages of the game. County/National Under 18's Report
Also being played yesterday at ISCA alongside the National Mixed Fours was the County/National Under 18's Finals. Out of the 7 entries were 3 players from Christow, Ava, Chloe and Sean. They all needed to be fully focused as they played each other resulting in 6 matches with only a short break for lunch. The standard of play was very high and often left those who were fortunate enough to watch speechless. It was decided to play just a finals match to find an overall winner. This was contested by Benny Bass and our very own Sean Woodley. Another high standard of bowls followed with some amazing shots appreciated and applauded by the spectators. The match was finally won by Benny. Both players will represent Devon at Tamworth on 8th April in the Nationals. Well done Sean. Also congratulations to both Ava & Chloe for some brilliant bowling and making your club proud.
National Mixed Fours Report
Yesterday 2 teams from Christow joined 6 other teams from various Devon clubs. Each team played 3 matches back to back with the top 4 going through to the quarter finals. Jeanette, Georgie, Trevor and Steve enjoyed some close battles but failed to qualify to the later stages. Maureen, Beryl, Geoff and Brad won 2 of their 3 matches which saw them into the quarter finals. After winning their quarter finals match they met Totnes Creameries (Rose Morrisson) in the semi finals. Totnes took an early lead, Christow kept playing their game and slowly bought the score back to 4 shots a piece. By this stage the momentum was with Christow and they won the match with a healthy shot difference. The final saw them meet Sidbury (Carol Osborne, Kim Wright, Malcolm Sheen and Eric Pavey) who the had already met in the first round which they lost by 1 shot. The final was a different game altogether and saw Sidbury win the match 11 shots to 0. Well done to Brad and his team for a great result. Your club are very proud of you all. Unfortunately only 1 team this year go through for Devon to the National Finals at Tamworth in April.

Devon County Pairs Finals Day Report
Today 4 teams from Christow took part in the Devon County Pairs Finals at ISCA. Competition was of a very high standard as you would expect from the teams that had qualified from the preliminaries back on 16th October. Each team played 3 games in their allocated groups. Winners and runners up from each group then progressed to the knockout stage. Steve and Sean won one of their 3 matches, Steve and others commented on how well Sean had played. Ralph and Ava won 2 out of their 3 matches which saw them progress to the knockout stage. Unfortunately they were knocked out in the first match, but congratulations to them both. Neil and Trevor won all 3 matches in their group which saw them meet Brad and Chloe who were in the same group. Unfortunately Brad and Chloe did not manage to progress through from the group stages, although Chloe would have gained some invaluble experience along with Ava. Neil and Trevor were also knocked out in the first round of the knockout stages. Apologies if I have any wins or losses in this report wrong, my memory is not what it was! Good luck tomorrow to the 2 teams in the National Mixed Fours and to Sean, Chloe and Ava in the Under 18's Singles.

The match started very well for the 'B' team and after 5 ends had pulled ahead by 6 shots to 1. Christow 'C' managed to pull back by scoring 4 shots on ends 6 and 9. The score on end 13 was tied on 11 shots each, Christow 'C' scored 1 shot on the 14th end. This put the 'B' team 1 shot behind, Christow 'C' were holding shot with one wood left for the 'B' team.
