Knockout Cup Final Result

On Wednesday 28th March,Tom ,Steve and Carol represented Christow in the final of the Exeter  Knockout cup at Broadclyst against Nomads A - Richard ,Robert and Ray. There was a lot of nervous banter going on before and during the game which was a nip and tuck affair with Christow having a 3 shot advantage after 13 ends. The knock out blow was delivered by Tom with his last wood on the 14th end. Nomads A were holding shot and Tom played the perfect draw avoiding two woods to finish shot wood. (Halo is now transferred from Neil to Tom). This gave Christow a four shot advantage going into the final end where Christow's woods were around the jack, reminiscent of the Indians circling the wagon train.Despite his best efforts Richard was unable to kill the end. Christow ran out 13 -11 victors to win Christow's first Exeter League trophy.
A big thank you to Broadclyst for being so accommodating and allowing us to use their venue for the evening.

Christow vs Buckfastleigh Report

Last night Christow played their penultimate match in this seasons Teignbridge League. Buckfastleigh made the journey to Christow in daylight. The first session of games were at one stage or another very close. Mat 1 on end 6 were level on 4 shots each, picking up 5 shots on the 7th end gave christow a nice cushion which they held onto and finished by wining 16 - 8. It was the turn of Buckfast to put the pressure on Christow on Mat 2. By end 9 Christow were 8 shots behind but with great determination they kept fighting and pulled back 7 shots to finish 11 -12, great effort. After tea and Doughnuts or birthday cake if you preferred (thank you Ava, Happy Birthday from us all) the second session got underway with two more very close games. On Mat 1 both teams were level by end 4, Christow managed to gain a 5 shot lead by the 8th end only to see Buckfast reduce the lead to 1 shot by the 11th end. With Christow scoring a single shot on the last end the final Final score was 10 - 8 to Christow. On Mat 2 Christow held the lead until the 9th end when Buckfast pulled level at 8 shots each. Over the final 3 ends Christow scored 5 shots over Buckfast's 3 to win the match 13 - 11.
A well deserved 8 points were earned on the night, well done to everyone, great nights bowling.

Christow B vs Silverton A at Silverton

Last night Christow B (Derek, Chris and Neil) played Silverton A (Jack, John and Danny). Play was on their fast mat that turned a lot on the left. Play started evenly with 2-2 after 4 ends to become 2-8 to Silverton after a slight misunderstanding and a dropped four. Not to be outdone Christow made this 5-8 to keep the game alive. At 5-10 to Silverton Neil got some help from his team and the score got to 9-10 on the eleventh end. Christow scored a three to make it 12-10 on the 12th end and Silverton swapped their team around with John taking the lead and Jack at two. They took two singles to level the score at 12-12 at 14 ends. In the final end Christow were holding when Jack moved the Jack to left hand edge of the mat (remember the turning side) for what looked to be a measure. Danny’s first wood was perfect, drawing across the mat and finishing close to the jack but there was still room to draw shot. Neil was a tad short with his first wood and Danny proved that his first wood was no fluke by drawing a second shot. I could feel John and Jack start to count their chickens but Neil had the last wood. We all expected Neil to draw across the mat – after all there was no other shot – was there???  He elected to play down the left side of the mat aiming to hit Danny’s wood and stop in the gap. This is exactly what he did – down the left side, just the right weight, hit the other woods and took shot to win the match 13-12 to Christow with his last wood. Neil in characteristically modest manner said “I just thought that was the thing to do” – Nobody else thought it was possible!! Well done Neil.
Just to repeat Christow B 13 shotsSilverton A 12 shots.

Once again mat one proved it's worth with both home teams having good wins. Before tea Tom's
team established an early lead against a rather stubborn opposition but they persevered and finished winning  13-7. Meanwhile on mat 2 Steve's team had a real battle and by end 9 was one shot down but they held their nerve and eventually won 12-11.
After tea on mat 1 Ian's team set out to amass a large score, the result was just that. An excellent match winning 24-4. (Geoff attributed there success to his birthday shoes). On mat 2 Jim and his team soldiered on, after losing the first end the struggle continued until the 9th end. Christow then took control winning 13-9.
Total shots 60-31. Points 10-0

Teignbridge League Raise £350 for Rowcroft Hospice

On Saturday the Teignbridge Fours tournament took place at the Teign Valley Community Hall. The aim was to have an enjoyable afternoon of competitive bowls and raise money for the Rowcroft Hospice. Christow S.M.B.C. prepared the hall laying out six mats for the matches and the tables and chairs for the cream tea. Many thanks to the members of the club who turned up early to lay out the hall and a special thanks to the Rundle family who were there from the beginning and worked hard to get the hall ready.  Play commenced just before 1.30 p.m. with two games of ten ends before tea and one game after tea. As always play was tight, even when the scores didn’t go your way. In the first game Christow A and Kingsteignton A finished with a draw of 5 shots each (one end was a tie) and Bishopsteignton showed their intent by winning 16 -6. In the second match Abbotskerswell, Christow A Ideford and Mortenhampstead decided their games by one shot achieved over the last end, while Exminster had a comfortable 15-1 win – many thought that the mat should be burnt!! (it was brand new this season). After two games Buckfast and Bishops were vying for the trophy, so the third game was all to play for. At the half way stage it looked as though Buckfast were scoring enough shots to just pip Bishops but there were playing Kingsteignton A who had other ideas and again as a result of the last ends the game finished a draw 13-13. While this drama was being played out Bishops went on to beat Christow B by one shot at 9-8 again down to the last end.
A great afternoon’s bowling with twists and turns all the way. Bishopsteignton won the tournament by winning all their games and scoring a shot difference of 16. Congratulations to Bishopsteignton.
£100 was raised at the Pairs tournament and £250 at this Fours tournament so the Teignbridge League is able to donate £350 to the Rowcroft Hospice.
Thank you to all the league players.....Derek

Exeter League Result for Christow B

Ralph, Sue & Neil travelled to Broadclyst last night to play their A team in the Exeter League. The match was played in a very good spirit and was very quiet as we were the only players present, apart from Brad who had come along for support and with a generous supply of mints. The mat was very slow and took a while for Christow to get the weight and by the 4th end were 7 shots to 0 down. Christow scored 2 shots on the 5th end and then took control of the game. During the remaining 10 ends Christow scored 14 shots to Broadclyst's 5 and won the match 16 - 11. Well done to Christow.
