Christmas Party
Last night we held our Christmas Party at Christow. The evening was a great success and was enjoyed by all. The bowls on the evening consisted of 6 teams playing a three mat challenge with a difference, not a jack in sight. There was a lucky dip for landing on prize wining squares and a prize for the overall points winners at the end of the challenge. The winners were Trevor, Steve, Edwin & Maureen, well done to them. Lots of food bought along by us all was then consumed, very nice it was too. A big thank you to Trevor for putting in the extra effort in organising the evening and to everyone for the lovely food.
Below are a few pictures from the evening.

Final Score Christow 'B' 15 Nomads 'A' 11.
Christow 'C' (Ava, Jeanette & Mark) were playing away to Broadclyst 'A'. The match was very competitive and a tight affair, Christow unfortunately lost the match by a single shot. I am not aware of the final score.

Kingsteignton Away Match Report
Not good news I'm afraid. Last night Christow travelled to Kingsteignton for the seconf match in the Teignbridge League. As Trevor was unable to attend and lead his team into battle, the cattle prod was handed over to Brad as Vice Captain. Both matches before tea went Kingsteignton’s way, one more than the other. Mat 1 (Beryl, Carol & Tom) started well but were on the back foot when they reached the final end and lost by 1 shot 13 - 14. Mat 2 (Mary, Edwin & Neil) could have done with that cattle prod as they were never in the game and finished 1 - 19 down. After tea Christow came out fighting and on Mat 1 (Maureen, Geoff & Jim) took the lead early on and held it to the end of the game and finished 15 - 8. Mat 2 (Chloe, Mark & Brad) had a very competitive match on what was a very slow mat. The final end saw Christow holding 4 shots which would have given them a draw, but Derek skipping for Kingsteignton took second shot with his final bowl. Final score 8 - 11. A nice evening of bowls, shame about the result.

The Charity chosen was The Ricky Grant / Turner Ward Trust at Torbay Hospital. Georgina Cleave and her family have recieved wonderful support from the trust over the last 8 months in helping her fight Cancer. Two days ago Georgina was given the wonderful news that she is now all clear.
The days bowling got under way at 9.05 with the first group of 8 teams playing 10 ends with 2 woods each over 45 minutes. After the buzzer sounded and the call for no more jacks it was the turn of the remainig 8 teams to get their challenge under way. Each group played four games in the round robin stage with a break for lunch. The winners from each group met in a final match over 10 ends with no time limit to find the overall winners. Derek was on umpire duties throughout the competition.
Various events were also held on the day to help raise as much money as possible for Georgina's charity. Carol ran the raffle which raised £225 due to the large amount of generous donated prizes on offer. Also Trevor organised an auction of prizes donated by local businesses (see list below) and club members. This raised another £200 for charity. Another £30 was raised by running a 2 Mat Challenge which was 50p a go and the winner was the owner of the bowl nearest the jack. After this Edwin Cleave (Chairman) made a presentation speech which outlined Georgies ordeal and informed her of the amount of money that had been raised so far.

Exeter League Result for Christow B
Last night Christow B (Derek, Chris & Neil) travelled to Silverton to meet their B team in our 5th match in this years Exeter League. We were made very welcome by Silverton and enjoyed a very close competitive game. The game was played on the middle mat which looks fast but in fact is very slow. The match started with both teams scoring over the first 5 ends and the score being tied at 4 shots each. By the 8th end Silverton had taken a 4 shot lead, not for long though as Christow went into the final end with lead of 1 shot. Unfortunately we were unable to hold onto the advantage and finished the game 11 shots to their 14. An enjoyable and frustrating game at the same time

Pairs Tournament 11th November
The Teignbridge Pairs tournament was held on Saturday 11th November at the Teign Valley community hall christow. As usual with the Teignbridge events there was a really good atmosphere, friends meeting each other and catching up with the gossip accompanied by four games of tight competitive play. 12 teams from the seven villages played four games of ten ends with three woods. After two games play was put on hold for a cream tea and this was followed by a further two games. During this tea break Ken Beer (the Teignbridge League competition Secretary) presented the Teignbridge league trophy to Trevor Tregillus (Captain of Christow) for winning the league in the 2016/17 season. Trevor had organised a special cream cake for everyone and I can assure you that they were truly delicious as well as looking beautiful. Thanks to Mo for all her hard work.
In the Pairs tournament Abbotkerswell A set the pace by winning their first game 21shots to 1 shot but the tournament was to be decided by points and shot difference only played a part in the event of a tie on points. Kinsteignton A won 10 – 2 and Kingsteignton B 15 – 3 so plenty to play for, not all games were so clear cut Bishopsteignton B drew with Buckfast A at 8 shots apiece – this was to prove crucial at the end of the day . This level of play continued all afternoon and it always seems strange that it comes down to the last wood of the last end. Abbots were playing Buckfast and needed two to draw, Ray Vyse played a cracking shot (no pressure!!!) and it looked tight but the teams agreed on one shot. While this drama was going on Kingsteignton were staying focused and won all their games with a large shot difference.
The results for the tournament were:
Winners - Kingsteignton A with 12 point and +35 shot difference
Second - Bishopsteignton B with 10 points and + 28 shot difference
Third - Abbotskerswell A with 9 points and +33 shot difference
Kinsteignton won the tournament last year and a hearty congratulations to them for the taking the trophy home for a second year. Well done Kingsteignton.

A little bit of Fun
Sharing of marriage...
The old man placed an order for one hamburger, French fries and a drink. He unwrapped the plain hamburger and carefully cut it in half, placing one half in front of his wife. He then carefully counted out the French fries, dividing them into two piles and neatly placed one pile in front of his wife.

He then carefully counted out the French fries, dividing them into two piles and neatly placed one pile in front of his wife.
He took a sip of the drink, his wife took a sip and then set the cup down between them . As he began to eat his few bites of hamburger, the people around them were looking over and whispering.
Obviously they were thinking, 'That poor old couple - all they can afford is one meal for the two of them. As the man began to eat his fries a young man came to the table and politely offered to buy another meal for the old couple. The old man said, they were just fine - they were used to sharing everything People closer to the table noticed the little old lady hadn't eaten a bite. She sat there watching her husband eat and occasionally taking turns sipping the drink. Again, the young man came over and begged them to let him buy another meal for them. This time the old woman said 'No, thank you, we are used to sharing everything.
Finally, as the old man finished and was wiping his face neatly with the napkin, the young man again came over to the little old lady who had yet to eat a single bite of food and asked 'What is it you are waiting for?'
She answered -- 'THE TEETH.'
Keep smiling!!
