John Warman Memorial Trophy at South Brent
This is wishing all your club members a Merry Christmas and Happy New Years bowling. In November I sent out an invite for the Charity event we hold each year in South Brent. I realise that it is a busy time of year and the deadline isn’t until the 31st December but I was wondering if any of your clubs intend to take part in the event. Everyone who attended last year and have replied said how much they enjoyed the competition. It would help me an awful lot if you wouldn’t mind letting me know one way or the other.
Best wishes,
Gary Hooper.

Here are a few pictures from last nights Christmas Bowls night. The evening was very enjoyable with a mix of bowls and a lovely buffet supplied by all the Christow members. Well done to Ian's partner Jackie who picked up a bowl for the first time and joined in and to Tom for his fancy dress efforts (see picture below).

Christow v Buckfast Match Report (Teignbridge League)
Last night 12 Christow players travelled to Buckfastleigh to play our 4th match in the Teignbridge League. The first two matches were underway just before 7.30pm. Tom's team on Mat 1 had a tight game and were just one shot behind on the 10th end, loosing 4 shots to buckfast on the 11th end proved too much to recover from. Ian and his team on Mat 2 were in total control of their destiny from the start and with a score of 15 - 2 by the 10th end were in a great position and finished the match by picking up a further 5 shots on the final end. After tea Neil's team played on Mat 1. Getting off to a steady start with a 5 shot advantage by the 5th end, Buckfast pulled back to level the score at 8 shots each by end 9. Christow managed to score a further 6 to Backfasts 1 over the final 3 ends. The remaining match on Mat 2 saw Trevor and his team in what turned out to be a tight battle after leading the way with a 6th shot advantage by the 6th end. Buckfast levelled the score by the 9th end and took the lead to go into the final end with a 2 shot advantage. Christow were holding 4 shots with one more bowl remaining from Buckfasts skip, he managed to take second shot preventing Christow holding on to the shots they needed.
The bonus points went to Christow and the final score was 6 - 4 to Christow (same result as last year).

Teign Valley Community Hall Refurbishment Consultation
I hope you’ll be pleased to hear that some of the Teign Valley
Commmunity Hall committee members have formed a working group to explore
options for a refurbishment and update of the hall.
As you may know, the Hall was built in 1998, funded mainly by Sports Lottery money. It used by a wide range of groups from all over the Valley and beyond for all kinds of meetings, classes, events and private functions. It is a fantastic, well-used facility which has been run and maintained by the Hall Committee for the last 20 years. But there is now scope to make improvements and updates to the building that go beyond the routine repairs and which will make it more efficient and environmentally-friendly to run, and better equipped and more comfortable for its users. This will be costly, so we will be applying for external funding again to pay for the project.
We are seeking expert advice on the technical aspects, but before we design the project and apply for funding, we are consulting the Teign Valley community and other hall users to gather ideas on what people would like to see by way of refurbishment and upgrades to the building. We want as wide a range of views as possible, representing the full range of residents, whatever their age, needs, interests, or time living in the area, in order to make sure that we have a facility which will continue to be used by the whole community for the next 20 years.
Complete the short survey at: tinyurl.com/TVCH2018
(or try https://exeter.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/tvchconsultation if the short address doesn’t work for you).
The survey is open from 1st to 10th December and every survey completed by a Teign Valley resident will be entered for a £25 cash prize draw.
There will be an open meeting at 7.30, Tuesday 18th December in the Bowden room when we’ll present and discuss the survey results, invite further views from those present, and hold the draw for the £25 cash prize. Please come along if you can.
Thank you in advance for your support.

A Couple of Christow B Results
Christow B recently played a couple of fixtures in the Exeter League. Derek. Chris and Geoff travelled away to Nomads A and enjoyed a tight game, they were level after 8 ends. Sue Young then took over from the Skip and did enough to change the game in Nomads favour. Final score 17 - 11 to Nomads A. On Tuesday evening Janet, Chris and Edwin made the journey to Silverton to meet their B team. Another close match for Christow B with both teams being tied on 10 shots each after 11 ends. Silverton did not allow Christow to score over the final 4 ends and won the match 19 - 10.
Christow v Bishops Match Report (Teignbridge League)
Yesterday evening, Christow hosted Bishopsteignton in the Teignbridge League. The first session before tea got underway just after 7 pm. On Mat 1 Bishops got off to a good start. Christow were playing well but were not given the opportunity to score heavily enough to catch up with Bishop's. Geoff's team on Mat 2 had a very close game and initially had a 4 shot lead, Bishop's managed to reduce this towards the end of the game. Christow picked up 1 shot on the final end but needed 2 to draw. After tea Christow's fortunes changed and on Mat 1 Trevor and his team had a close battle but were always a shot or two ahead in the game. Mat 2 was totally dominated by Christow from the outset. Bishops only managed to score on a few ends resulting in a large shot difference. This helped to give Christow the bonus 2 points for overall shots (Christow 46, Bishops 43). Well done to all players.

Christow Meet Bere Alston in the County Tens
Today Christow played the home leg of the County Club Team (Tens) South/West Area competition. 10 players from Bere Alston made their way to Christow for a 1pm start. Some players from both teams arrived a little earlier to allow them to have their lunch and a cuppa or two before the matches got underway. In the first session the Pairs and Triples played their matches which consisted of 10 ends with 2 trial ends to start. The Pairs was a close match played on the new fast mat against Brenda and John. In the Triples Bere Alston picked up the mat very quickly and gave Geoff and his team a tough match. As soon as they finished it was the turn of the Singles and Fours to play their matches. Steve dominated the Singles and showed Luis a "clean pair of heels". Tom and his team were 4 shots in front on the final end only to see Barry collect the jack with his last wood and score 5 shots. The return leg is scheduled to take place at Bere Alston on 12th January. Both teams will be level on match points, Christow will be starting with a 7 shot advantage.
Singles - Steve 17 - 4
Pairs - Trevor & Neil 10 -8

Christow v Abbots Match Report (Teignbridge League)
Last night 12 players from Christow travelled to Abbotkerswell to do battle in the Teignbridge League. We were met by a team of 11 players from Abbots and at 7.10pm play commenced. Both matches played on Mat 1 took a similar route to the final score with Abbots taking command and Christow rallying towards the end of the game. A swap of player positions on the match before tea helped Christow to narrow the deficit. Both matches played on Mat 2 started well for Christow only to see Abbots regain the lead. Although it took them until the final end on the match after tea to prevent Christow achieving any points on the night.

Christow v Ideford Match Report (Teignbridge League)
Christow got their Teignbridge League season under way last night by playing hosts to Ideford. Christow managed to take all 10 points on the night after a very competitive evening of bowls.
I have to admit that I was somewhat concerned how tonight's match would pan out. With Ideford and Buckland joining forces they were a unknown force but although our visitors fought hard for every point the eventual outcome was never in doubt.
Before tea on mat 1 the score after seven ends was 14-2 and although Ideford & Co won three of the final ends the final score was 17-5. Meanwhile on Mat 2 Steve and Chris really need to spend more time rehearsing 'high fives', as they would say on Strictly, it appeared to lack coordination and confidence but despite this and with Chloe soldiering on they only dropped two ends eventually winning 12-3. After tea on Mat 1 the winning theme continued but it was a very competitive match, with only three ends scoring more than one shot. Final score 10-4. Mat 2 the score after six ends was 11-0 but Ideford fought back but losing 15-5.
Teams
Before tea
Mat 1 Mary. Sean. Ian.
Mat 2. Chloe. Chris. Steve.
After tea
Mat 1 Ava. Ralph. Trevor.
Mat 2 Maureen. Neil. Geoff
Many thanks to all who supported the teams this evening.. Well done everyone, a great start to the season!
Next Thursday we are away to Abbotskerswell - supporters are always appreciated.....Trevor

Christow A Meet Exminster in the Knockout Cup
Last night Christow A (Carolyn, Andrew and Tom) met Exminster A (Ken Beer, Renee + 1) in the Exeter League's Knockout Cup competition. The match was a very close and by the time they reached the 15th end Christow were 3 shots behind, Tom had the final wood and his team were holding 2 shots with the jack dead in the ditch. Trying to replace the opponents 3rd wood with his own just failed as he caught their wood on the wrong side, it was a great effort though. Final score 11 - 10 to Exminster.

Exeter League Meeting
A meeting was held last night (7.30pm) by the Exeter League at the St Thomas Cricket Club in Exeter. The meeting was very brief and chaired by Richard Ivings. The main topic on the agenda was to make the draw for the the Knockout Cup Competition. Rob Gayton drew two teams for a Preliminary match which is required this year as there were 9 teams taking part. The two teams drawn were Christow A v Exminster A and the match is to be played as stated on the schedule sheet. The draw for the next stage of the competition will be made at the next meeting in January, the date of which is yet to be set. Rob also requested that when teams fill out their score cards could they please use players full names or initial and surname, and not just write down Fred, Harry & Pat. The meeting closed at 7.42, I said it was brief!

Yesterday saw the qualifiers from earlier in the month gather at ISCA for the finals of the County Pairs. Representing Christow were Ralph & Ian along with Steve & Geoff. Unfortunately neither team made it through to the knockout stages. All was not lost as this year a Plate Competition had been arranged to give bowlers more games. Both Christow teams made it to the final of the Plate where Steve and Geoff emerged as the Winners. Well done to both teams.

After some tough matches and draws Steve & Ralph along with Trevor and Neil made it to the knockout stage. Both lost their respective matches and headed home after an enjoyable competition. Frank Tritschler - Abbotskerswell
An update on Frank Tritschler – He had a heart attack on 22 June while riding with his cycle club. He came off the road and collided with a wooden post. He broke his neck and three ribs but more serious was oxygen depravation. A lady gave CPR and Air Ambulance took him to Derriford. For 3 weeks his life was hangi by a thread but happily, during the next 11 weeks Frank has made major steps toward recovery. Frank’s wife Linda has been amazing, supporting Frank and helping co-ordinate the professionals. Frank is now walking and talking, and has a long term challenge ahead to overcome brain injury and memory loss......Ray Vyse

County Fours Report
On Saturday 22nd September, Steve, Brad, Sean and Chloe participated in the County Fours competition at ISCA. The day started with the group stages consisting of 3 games, all of which we won. We then met Yarnscome in the Quarter-Finals. Sean managed to ditch the jack at the end of what was a very tight game, his wood could not be beaten. Our next match was against Nomads (including Ian) in the Semi-Finals. After a tense game we were beaten by 2 shots. A play off for 3rd and 4th place followed, Bow were our opponents who we overcame after a nip and tuck affair. Finishing in 3rd position give us an entry place in the National Fours next April.....Steve.
The eventual winners were a team consisting of Ava, Barry McPhillips, Carol Dummett And Ralph. Congratulation to them. Any further reports will be posted.

Safeguading and Welfare Officer
The ESMBA, Affiliated County’s and Bowls clubs have a responsibility for the welfare of all its members at risk who take part in the sport. With this in mind, all clubs need to appoint a Welfare Officer with their name and contact number displayed on the board alongside a Code of Conduct. The Welfare Officer would then contact the County Safeguarding Officer, his details are listed on the Devon Website. Templates for the Code of Conduct covering club members and club officials including volunteers will be put on the board for further discussion.

Yesterday Brad, Chloe, Geoff, Ian, Jim, Neil, Sean, Steve, Tom & Trevor travelled to Cloakham in Axminster to take part in the Jurassic Inter-Area challenge. 4 teams (Dorset, East Devon, West Devon & Jurassic) took part, playing 3 matches each. 15 ends for the Pairs, 13 for the triples and 11 for the Fours, each area entered two teams for each discipline. There was a good supply of bacon rolls to greet you after the early morning start and plenty refreshments throughout the day with a choice of Baguettes for lunch. National/County Player Substitutes
Confirmation from Caroline re: National/County substitutes.
Question.....We have a bowler at Christow who wishes to enter the National/County pairs but will not be available able to play in the Finals if they were to reach that far. His question is, could he substitute himself for the finals if needed? The rule ESMBA rule book says this is possible, but he wanted to clarify this with you in case your ruling was different for next season.
Answer.....Hi Neil, yes that’s ok, but he won’t be able to substitute with someone that has played in the same competition.
Regards,
Caroline.

Spring Bowling Picnic Report
Christow held a Charity bowls competition yesterday in aid of the National Autistic Society. It was called the Spring Bowling Picnic...not that the weather was very Spring like! 16 teams consisting of 3 players with 2 woods each took part. Everyone played 3 games in the 4 sessions before lunch, Lunch was an amazing selection of food in the style of a picnic with a lot of the food including cakes for the afternoon being generously supplied by people connected with the event... thank you to you all.
Feeling refreshed the afternoon knockout stages began. The top two teams from each group entered the Cup Finals and the remainder went into the Plate Final. How each team progressed can be seen in the table below:

The brief was as follows.............As it’s a picnic, have a rummage in your chest of drawers or walk-in wardrobe (if you’re posh) and wear something suitable for bowling in the country There will be a prize for the best dressed team (no wellies on the mats!)
Wining this accolade were Exeter Nomads (see picture below).
The event was very successful and raised £426 for the Charity. Congractulations to Carol & Tom Archer for organising the day along with Trevor Tregillus, A big thank you to Ian Nicholls who managed to bowl and score the competition at the same time. Also to all who helped in the kitchen and set up the hall.

Devon County A Team WIN ICC Final
The Devon County A Team played against Somerset today in the ICC (Inter County Championships) at Tamworth Bowling Centre. The first two Sessions were dominated by Devon with the Singles and Pairs picking up 7 out of the 8 points on offer as did the Triples and Fours which followed immediately afterwards. Somerset had a small amount of success in the two sessions after lunch but Devon's spirit overcame any chance of a comeback. After taking further points off Somerset and securing all but one of the bonus points, Devon won the final 32 points to Somersets 8. Well done to Robert Ivings and his team for a fantastic end to what has become a record breaking season.
Pictures of the victorious team will be posted as soon as they are available.

Exminster Home Match Report
Last evening we eventually played our last Teignbridge league match,it's been a long season.
Before tea mat one had a hard battle against a team who quickly mastered the Mat. Each team won six ends but Exminster slowly edged ahead, eventually winning 13-9. Meanwhile on Mat two things didn't look too good, after seven ends the score read 2-7 this was when our boys dug in and by end 9 had established a one shot lead. They then took control of the match winning 14-8.
After tea on Mat one Christow bolted into the lead and after some 9 ends (good old nine again) the score was 11-4 but Exminster rallied while our skip had a nap, unlikely to happen again, the final score being 13-9. On Mat two Christow started full of confidence and were never under threat throughout the match only losing three ends. The final score reflected their confidence at a very credible 18-5.

Jurassic Two Pair Fours / Cloakham, Axminster, 22 Apr 18
Sadly we have had TWO PAIRS (Four players) cry off at this short notice. Obviously the Tournament can still run but it leaves a hole, which is unfair on those putting the effort out.
If anybody knows of or would like to play themselves then please email reply by return.
I shall monitor email every few hours ...............
Hopefully many touchers.
